My Italy Top Tips, Video & Stories Issue July 2021 July 31, 2021 |
This month we are doing nothing! Well, no, that's not EXACTLY correct. We are going to share a little about dolce far niente, an art form that revolves around doing very little, in a particularly Italian sort of way. I still have a long way to go before I master it. I always feel the need to be doing something. I am trying though... and slowly, very slowly, improving. Once you've mastered the art of doing nothing we'll take you off to the quieter corners of Italy and share with you the moving story of the cross on a hill. Dolce Far NienteDon't be fooled into thinking that doing nothing is easy, far from it. Italy taught me that there is an art to it. I am still learning but Maria, like all Italians, is an expert. Learning to do it properly has been one of the great pleasures of my life. Here's everything you need to know. A Quieter ItalyOne of the things that surprised me the most about Italy, long before I met Maria and moved there, was the far north: regions such as Trentino-Alto Adige and the northern parts of the Veneto. This was not the Italy I had imagined when I was young, it seemed more like the chocolate box idyll of Switzerland: green pastures, cows with bells and immaculate picture postcard villages. I was stunned. There were many other areas too that filled me with the same sense of peace,
you can read about them here.
Looking Down From His HillA story, sent to us by one of our readers, and sharing his journey on the road he travels between two little towns really moved me. I couldn't wait to share it with you. You can read it here. Maria and I shall be back with more stories from Italy next month. We look forward to catching up with you then. In the meantime stay safe, the numbers of cases of this virus seem to be rising again in many countries and even our friends in Australia now tell us it is spreading fast there. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
